Best side jobs for regular people without fancy degrees

You might be thinking this is going got be full of MLM or pyramid schemes! No way! there is none of that here. I hate that crap.

Read This Scenario.

This is the story of Jen and Steve.

Currently, Jen is a stay-at-home mom of two boys ages 1 and 4. Before having kids, Jen worked as a marketing coordinator for a medium-sized construction company.

She always wanted to have kids and stay at home with them so she didn’t miss a moment of their childhood. When Jen and her husband, Steve, started talking about starting a family she was very clear about her dream of being a stay-at-home mom.

Jen did the math. After monthly childcare expenses, she brought home very little money. It just made sense to stay home. So after the birth of their first child, Jen didn’t go back to work. In hindsight, Jen wished they had planned better financially for her maternity leave.

Jen and Steve cut back on vacations, eating out, cable, and decreased contributions for their retirement. They did what they could to make it work. At first, everything was fine, but little by little they started to sink further and further into debt.

By the time they had their second child, they had a line of credit of $20K. Steve started to work as much overtime as he could and were able to get their line of credit down to $15K. However, eventually, opportunities for overtime became less and less. Jen and Steve realized they couldn’t count on overtime alone.

They didn’t know what they were going to do. It wasn’t financially feasible for Jen to get a job because of childcare costs. She couldn’t work evenings out of the home because Steve often had to work late

So what did Jen and Steve do?

Jen took to google and searched things like save money, make extra money, how to make extra money on the side, etc.

She found lots of great ways to shave extra money off their monthly expenses and started budgeting heavily. Through this process, she discovered a lot of things.

She realized they needed to:

She didn’t have a lot of free time with two little kids to run around after so she tried a lot of different things that didn’t take up a ton of time. She started with simple ways to make money from home like doing surveys and babysitting. As she got more comfortable and more focused, she ventured out and tried bigger things.

Can you relate to this story?

Do you want to make extra money in your jammies while watching your kids play, when they are sound asleep, or on your own schedule? Dumb question right? YES, who doesn’t!

Who hasn’t asked the question how to make extra money on the side at some point in their lives. The difference is take action instead!

Read on my friend!

I know there is an opportunity or two below to make extra money on the side that is going to change your life and get that debt off your back or give you permission to take that long-overdue vacation!

There are a lot of totally legitimate small to big side hustles that moms or dads can do each day. Depending on the amount of free time and energy you have, will determine what kind of side hustle(s) you choose.

Some of them are super easy to implement and you can get started on asap and others will take some time to get off the ground. However, the list below focuses on side hustles that pretty much anyone can do with some determination.

You won’t find any side hustles where you need three degrees, super techie skills, suggesting you become a day trader, etc. You get my point.

This list of Side Hustle for Stay-At-Home Moms or Dads is For Normal People!

I’m sorry, that seems kind of yelly.

But it drives me bonkers when I see side hustles suggestions where the majority of them are like “be a data science consultant” or “be a business coach,” or “drive for Uber.” Those are legit and all but not something most people are going to go for due to various reasons.

Ok enough. Let’s get to the list!

1. Do Paid Surveys.

If you need instant results, this is a good way to get into side hustling. Doing surveys is a good way to earn a little extra money or gift cards while watching TV. They are completely free and they pay you for your opinion! Here are a bunch of legit survey companies:

  • Pinecone Research
  • Swagbucks
  • American Consumer Opinion
  • Survey Junkie
  • Clear Voice Surveys
  • VIP Voice
  • Harris Poll Online
  • Opinion Outpost
  • Survey Spot

Your payment will be either in cash via Pay Pal or in gift cards.

Most companies pay approximately $3 to $10 per survey. That can really add up!

I’m gonna level with you on surveys though. Doing surveys over and over again can be mind numbing. Yes you can make money so if you need cash quickly give it a try. BUT if you are looking for something more fulfilling and something you can build on in the long term, skip this one and spend your valuable time on other options below.

2. Website/Product Testing.

Before products are released, part of the development process is to get real opinions from real people to test their products and make any necessary adjustments before they hit the market. To get going, you will need to sign up with the individual companies:

Product testing typically pays from $3 to $125 per test through PayPal or similar or gift cards. Huge range, I know.

3. Virtual Assistant.

There are dozens of areas you could become a virtual assistant in such as Pinterest, email management, social media management, content creation, etc, etc You can do this all from the comfort of your home or where ever you happen to be on your own time!

If this is of interest to you but you think you need some training Check out this course on how to become a Virtual Assistant. This one is really cool.

You can make anywhere from $20 to $100 per hour depending on the type of virtual assistant you become.

4. Proofread.

There is a huge demand for proofreaders. Technology just can’t catch everything. I have actually hired a proofreader and it saved me hours of work so I know the importance of this service.

So, do you like catching typos? Do spelling and grammar mistakes drive you crazy? If you want to be sure you know you have all the necessary skills, Caitlin Pyle has a very popular course that teaches you how. Check out her free 45-minute course to get you started!

5. Loan Signing Agent/Notary Public.

I pulled the following description from Loan Signing System who teaches courses on this subject:

“A loan signing agent is a notary public who knows loan documents.

When someone purchases or refinances a home, a notary loan signing agent is hired to walk the homeowner through their final paperwork and have them sign it. The loan signing agent will print the loan paperwork, meet the borrower and watch them sign the paperwork. Then after the paperwork is signed, they will drop off the paperwork in a FedEx or UPS using a preprinted postage label. For this simple task, a loan signing agent makes anywhere from $75 to $200 per appointment. And that appointment typically takes about an hour.”

Why you should consider this side hustle.

  • You can work it around your existing schedule
  • You don’t need any experience
  • You don’t need a college degree

This side hustle is quite specific to the U.S. In Canada, each province has a process for becoming a Notary Public which appears to be complicated. Perhaps, a post for another time.

Loan Signing Agents make $75 to $200. Um hello!

6. Child Care Provider.

Since you’re already home, why not take care of an extra kid or two and make some money in the process?

Parents are always looking for mature people to take care of their little ones. Believe me! You can post on your local sites such as Facebook, Kijiji, Craigslist, etc. You can also set up a profile on:

You can make approximately $50 per day per kid.

7. Before & After School Care Provider.

If taking care of other people’s kids all day in addition to your own sounds like too much, think about just before and after school care. Working parents often just need an hour in the morning and an hour or two after school. This way you still have the rest of your day.

You can make approximately $10-12/hour.

8. Teach English online to kids through VIPKID.

I’m sure there are lots of stay-at-home parents that were once school teachers. This side hustle is perfect for teachers. However, you don’t need to be a teacher to teach with VIPKID.

Qualifications to become a VIPKID teacher:

  • A bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience with the US or Canadian education system.
  • At least one year of school teaching experience -OR- an equivalent such as training, coaching, mentoring, leadership, preschool worker, etc.

If accepted, VIPKID gives you all the training and materials that you need.

Sessions are 25 minutes long and you can earn up to $22/hour.

9. Transcriptionist.

Transcriptionists take audio files and turn it into text.

There is a huge demand for transcription services all over the world in pretty much every industry.

Most transcription companies pay in audio hours which means if you are given a recording that is one hour long, you are paid $20 for example from TranscribeMe to complete the transcription. However, it could take you longer than 1 hour to complete.

Here are a bunch of companies that hire transcription contractors:

Many of these companies require you to pass a transcription test before they will hire you.

Since the qualifications fluctuate from one company to another, it is hard to say exactly what they pay. Some start as low as $10 per audio hour and some pay as high as $40 per audio hour with the exception of Quicktate.

Transcribe anywhere has affordable courses to prepare you for not only transcribing but how to market your business and get clients.

10. Pinterest Affiliate Marketing.

First of all, affiliate marketing is when a company pays you a commission for recommending their product.

A while back Pinterest changed its policy to allow users to pin affiliate links. Before this, you would have to pin a blog post that contained the affiliate link. Not anymore! Therefore, this means you don’t have to blog to get affiliate sales!

Pinterest is amazing because users search for answers to their problems and interests. This will lead them to websites that sell solutions like that perfect outfit or supplies for a project. This is not a get rich quick thing. It will take time to build.

Why you should do it:

  • No start-up cost as long as you have a device and internet (who doesn’t).
  • Do in your spare time.
  • You don’t need a blog.

LeeAnn from Girl Bosses Rock has created a free beginner course to get you started.

11. Freelance.

According to a study conducted by Upwork; “Freelancers predicted to become the U.S. workforce majority within a decade, with nearly 50% of millennial workers already freelancing.”

Therefore, people all over the world are choosing to freelance over traditional jobs to make their desired lifestyle a reality. Hiring freelancers is catching on big time due to the flexibility it provides not to mention the low costs compared to employing someone, tax benefits, and so on.

I have been a freelance HR consultant for the last few years and have made more working less hours than when I was employed.

Think about your talents and/or education. What are you trained in and good at?

There are tons of ways a person can make money freelancing. A few examples are web design, graphic design, marketing, recruitment, illustration, AutoCad, video editing, blog writing, copywriting, translation, accounting, etc. Check out these websites where you can find work:

12. Blogger.

Starting a blog is definitely an undertaking! Oh my goodness! Particularly for people (such as myself) who know are not technologically gifted.

However, if you have a message, enjoy writing, and have an insatiable desire to build a business that is totally flexible, blogging could be your answer!

Before you start your blog, I recommend that you think hard about your niche. Certain niches tend to earn better than others. According to obstacle.co, the top money-making niches are:

  1. How to make money.
  2. Personal Finance (like my blog)
  3. Health & Fitness
  4. Food
  5. Beauty & Fashion
  6. Lifestyle
  7. Personal Development

The riches are in the niches, they say.

Also, there are lots of amazing resources out there to help you. I invested a lot of money in blogging courses and found the best one to be Dare to Conquer (DTC), formerly Billionaire Blog Club (BBC).

I have been using DTC for close to a year now and I am amazed by the value. There are tons of courses on SEO, Pinterest, affiliate marketing, email marketing, google analytics, content creation, and more. There is also a community of bloggers who help each other over Slack. Also, the owner of DTC is on Slack a lot to help. You get your questions answered often in minutes!

So if you have been on the fence about starting a blog, you can do it. I am not going to lie, it is a lot of work but it is very rewarding to see what you can build from anywhere in your spare time!

It is not a get rich quick thing either but you can build a blog to be a full-time business with very little start-up.

To get started you will need to select a hosting company. I use and recommend Siteground. It is amazing. Their customer service is great. A lot of bloggers recommend Bluehost but in my research by reading reviews, Siteground beats Bluehost.

13. Web Search Evaluator.

This is a great way to make money from anywhere. Sometimes, search engines need humans to verify and evaluate results. Web Search Evaluators look at and critique ad copy, text, images, and text. They write a report on their analysis.

I have read that it can be hard to break into this type of position but because of its flexibility, It’s worth a try. If you are bilingual, it might increase your chances of getting a job.

Some companies call this job “ad quality rater.”

Here is a list of companies to apply to:

These companies typically pay starting at $13/hr.

14. Bookkeeper

There are so many small companies that aren’t big enough to have a bookkeeper on staff but they still need their bookkeeping done.

This is where you come in. And you don’t need to be an accountant to start a virtual bookkeeping business. Also, the start-up costs are low.

You can do this work from home and on your schedule.

If you don’t have any experience, there’s a great free introductory course by Ben Robinson, CPA, that will help you decide if this is something you want to pursue. Ben Robinson has been featured on the Penny Hoarder, Inc, and Entrepreneur.

The median annual salary for a bookkeeper is $41,073/year.

15. Ironing Service.

I despise ironing. Because of my hate for ironing, I put it off. Which has created a mountain of clothes that need ironing. In December, I was really busy with my HR consulting work and just didn’t have the time or energy to tackle the giant pile of ironing.

So, I looked on Kijiji (similar to Craigslist) under services and found someone near my house that had an ad for ironing. She charged approximately $2/item but if you had more than 20 items, she gave a volume deal.

What would have taken me days, took her hours. She was done so fast, I couldn’t believe it.

So, if you don’t mind or even like ironing (which is weird) and are quick and efficient at it, this might be a good easy side hustle for you!

If you can iron ten items in an hour for example, at $2 per item, you can make $20/hr.

16. Open an Etsy Store.

Are you crafty, can paint, sew clothes, make jewelry, knit, crochet, build things, create prints or printables? The possibilities are endless!

17. Amazon FBA.

Sell products through Amazon’s FBA program. That stands for Fulfillment By Amazon. You find discounted products, ship them to Amazon to be stored, sell them on Amazon, and Amazon ships them. Check out the selling family who pioneered this side hustle.

18. Flip Free or Undervalued Used Items.

A friend of mine was telling me she met a guy at a gym who made $25K in one year by scouring the local listings on Facebook, Craiglist, Kijiji, etc and garage sales for free and undervalued stuff and flipped it for a profit. What!

The trick to this one is to go for the higher ticket items like appliances, furniture, etc. I know this is possible because I have seen numerous items be given away online or sold for next to nothing.

Also, If you are handy even better. Often times things are posted for free because they need minor repairs, a new part, etc. The owner often doesn’t have the time or skill to fix them. Take advantage of this opportunity.

For instance, I found this beautiful dresser that someone was selling for $50. It’s a Stanley piece of furniture – very high quality but it was very dirty and beat up. I kept it but I know could sell it for probably around $300.

When you go to sell your items, consider selling them on eBay. The reason is reach! Ebay’s reach is much greater than local online marketplaces.

You will need some garage space for this one for sure.

19. Pet sit.

If you love to take care of animals on a short-term basis, this side gig is for you. Offer your services when you are available. Not to mention you can offer your services out of your home.  And you can get your kids involved!

There are tons of sites you can sign up for:

You can earn around $30-50/day.

20. Tutor.

Become an online tutor. Typically, you would use Skype or something similar so you can interact with the student face-to-face. You can tutor online from wherever you are.

There are a bunch of tutoring companies to check out:

The average hourly wage for these companies is approximately $20/hour.

21. Bonus Tip: Ebates.

So, this isn’t a side hustle but is a great money-saving tool that I just have to mention because it’s awesome.

Basically, Ebates is a big referral program. It drives consumers to order online from participating companies. In exchange, the company gives Ebates a portion of the sale and then Ebates gives you a bit of their commission.

Ebates IS totally legit!

I use it all the time and it is so simple. All you have to do is create an account and when you are shopping online, activate before you make a purchase. You can choose your money to go into your Paypal account or they will send you a check.

You aren’t going to get rich off it by any means, but earning money back on purchases you were going to make anyways, is just a no-brainer.

Also, the variety of stores somewhat depends on the country you live in. I mostly use it for Amazon, Zulily, Old Navy, Gap.
